The Vancouver Whitecaps are reportedly closing in on an international soccer star.
Speculation about the future of German soccer legend Thomas Müller has been running rampant after a cryptic video was posted on his YouTube channel on Saturday. In it, the 35-year-old sits alongside a river with his brother and father while he reminisces about his 17-year tenure in the Bundesliga. He also references making a jump across “the big pond,” which has many thinking he will continue his career in the MLS.
The Whitecaps are among the teams linked to Müller, and now a prominent member of the organization has commented on the rumours. Axel Schuster, the CEO and sporting director of the ‘Caps, appeared on the Sekeres & Price Show recently, where he poured some cold water on the rumour.
He mentioned that the Whitecaps do not have a designated player spot open and are focusing on improving their defence after two season-ending injuries to Ranko Veselinović and Sam Adekugbe.
“Everyone can imagine what we are focusing on and working on; there is no more to say,” Schuster said. “Nothing is holding me back from thinking that would be a great thing, but we are working in the reality.”
Müller is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of his era. He spent the entirety of his time in the Bundesliga playing for Bayern Munich, scoring 250 goals across all competitions and helping his club to a record 13 championships.
He helped Germany win the World Cup in 2014, scoring five goals throughout the tournament.
Signing Müller would not be straightforward for Vancouver. FC Cincinnati holds his discovery rights and has reportedly already offered him a contract. If that doesn’t come to fruition, the Whitecaps can acquire Müller’s rights to bring him to Vancouver.
Despite Schuster playing coy about the possibility, soccer insiders are continuing to insist that the Whitecaps are the frontrunners to land Müller.
While LAFC was seen as the favourites to land Müller before these reports, due to their close ties to Bayern, the Whitecaps seem to have taken that spot. Soccer reporter Ben Jacobs reported that Vancouver is in active talks with Müller and is discussing acquiring his discovery rights from Cincinnati.

Vancouver is enjoying a very good season so far, sitting second in the Western Conference with 45 points. Adding Müller into the fold would only help the club as it searches for its first-ever MLS Cup.
