Vancouver Whitecaps could host MLS Cup Final but their next playoff match won't be at BC Place

The Vancouver Whitecaps won’t be bringing the party back to BC Place this weekend.

But, there’s still a chance that they can host one more playoff game.

Vancouver advanced to the Western Conference Final on Saturday night with an epic 3-2 win over Los Angeles FC in penalty kicks. It was their biggest win since joining MLS and arguably one of the most impressive wins in Vancouver sports history.

The Whitecaps had a chance to host another home playoff game this weekend if Minnesota United FC was able to beat San Diego FC in the other Western Conference Semifinal matchup on Monday night.

However, the favoured San Diego FC ended up on top.

Anders Dreyer scored in the 72nd minute for San Diego FC against Minnesota. It was the only goal San Diego needed, as they prevailed 1-0 over Minnesota in the other Western Conference Semifinals matchup.

That means San Diego will host Vancouver on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m.

The Whitecaps and San Diego actually finished tied with 63 points at the end of the MLS regular season. However, San Diego was awarded the tiebreaker based on the fact that they had 19 wins, while the ‘Caps had 18.

Head-to-head this season, Vancouver went 0-1-1 against San Diego. They lost their first match against the Western Conference regular season winners back on June 25, when Milan Iloski scored four goals in 12 minutes against Vancouver goalie Yohei Takaoka. The Whitecaps ultimately lost the contest 5-3.

The two teams tied 1-1 in their second match of the season back on July 19. Vancouver was leading that match until San Diego tied it in the 79th minute.

Chance Whitecaps could host MLS Cup Final

There is a chance the Whitecaps could host the MLS Cup Final at BC Place.

If Lionel Messi and Inter Miami win the East, the MLS Cup Final will take place in South Florida. But if the Whitecaps and New York City FC make it through, the MLS Cup Final would take place at BC Place.

The Whitecaps are unsurprisingly underdogs heading into the matchup against San Diego. According to FanDuel, San Diego is +130 to win, while Vancouver is +185.
