The Vancouver Whitecaps left no doubt in their MLS Cup playoff clinching win against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
It was the largest blowout MLS victory in Whitecaps history as they torched Philadelphia 7-0 with some help from Thomas Müller’s first hat trick with Vancouver. It was a statement win for the Whitecaps as they not only qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive season, another franchise first, but they tore apart the league-leading team in the process.
Vancouver head coach Jesper Sørensen was obviously happy with the result, but was surprised at how dominant his team was against one of the best MLS teams.
“It’s nothing like this you could have predicted beforehand,” Sørensen said. “We haven’t played for a while, and we wanted to come out strong… I also think that this was a great test and game for us; there was a little bit of a playoff vibe in this before coming in.
“I just think that the players came out really strong, they wanted to play the right way, with the right mindset, keep attacking even though we got off to a good start… After a game like this, it’s difficult really to say the right words, but it was great.”

The 7-0 result is the team’s largest margin of victory since the Whitecaps joined the MLS back in 2011. Before Saturday, that honour belonged to four separate 5-0 victories that happened in 2024, 2023, and 2017.
It also ties the MLS record for biggest win, becoming just the sixth 7-0 victory in league history and tying the margin of an 8-1 LA Galaxy win back in 1998.
Müller was the undisputed hero of this match, netting a hat trick on his 36th birthday in front of a lower-bowl sell-out BC Place crowd of over 26,000 fans. The German footballer now has four goals and one assist in his first three MLS appearences.
He became the first player in league history to net a hat trick on their birthday.
The World Cup champion met with the media after the blowout and was his usual cheery self, though he does not want the Whitecaps to dwell too much on this historic victory.
“It was a great team effort, to be honest. Philly are still top of the league, to win 7-0 against them, even though it was our home game and we were confident, that’s a very special day,” Müller said. “I also read that that was the highest win for the Whitecaps in their history, so we can be proud for two days, and then we go again.
“We have to get used to beating good teams and competing against really good teams. I think we have to build some confidence to trust ourselves.”

The Whitecaps are on the edge of having their best-ever MLS season as well. With six regular-season games left on its schedule, Vancouver is just two wins away from setting a new MLS franchise win record. They are also two goals away from setting a new single-season franchise goal record.
Vancouver will host the CPL’s Forge FC on Tuesday for a semi-final match in the Canadian Championship. The Whitecaps will return to MLS action next weekend as they head on a brief one-game road trip against Sporting KC.
The team will be back home on Sept. 24 for a match against the Portland Timbers.
