White Rock mayor's name to be removed from civic election ballot after all
White Rock Mayor Megan Knight’s name will no longer appear on the City’s 2026 mayoral civic election ballot, after the provincial government approved her withdrawal from the race.
In a statement issued this afternoon, in a highly unusual and rare move, the City of White Rock confirmed it had received formal approval from the B.C. Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
Only two mayoral candidates will now appear on the Oct. 17 ballot: Susan Bains, a current city councillor with Together for White Rock, and realtor Chris Shields.
Knight, who was elected mayor in 2022, announced last week that she would instead run for the Conservative Party of British Columbia — seeking the MLA seat of Surrey South in the Oct. 24 provincial election.
Her announcement came days after the City’s Sept. 18 deadline for municipal candidates to withdraw, initially leaving her name set to appear on both the civic and provincial election ballots.
The provincial approval has now cleared the way for her removal from the mayoral ballot, avoiding potential voter confusion.
