Here's what is open and closed in Vancouver on New Year's Day

Get ready, Vancouver! The new year is just around the corner, and we’re here to help you get prepared for the start of 2026.

Jan. 1 will be a slower day for some, but for those looking to make the most of the statutory holiday, we’ve got the details on what’s open and closed to make some last-minute plans.

Don’t forget that free public transit on the entire TransLink system across Metro Vancouver returns on New Year’s Eve!

And if you’re feeling brave, put on your trunks, grab a towel and head to English Bay for the annual Polar Bear Swim.

  • CF Pacific Centre Mall (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • International Village (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • Park Royal (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Metropolis (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • The Amazing Brentwood (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
  • Coquitlam Centre (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

Community Centres

  • Kerrisdale (open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Mount Pleasant (open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Trout Lake (open 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
  • All other community centres are closed

Ski hills

New Year

Cypress Mountain

  • Grouse Mountain (open 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • Cypress Mountain Resort (open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Mt Seymour (8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.)

Translink

TransLink buses, SeaBus, and SkyTrain services will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule on Jan. 1. West Coast Express will also not operate.

TransLink Customer Service Centre, Access Transit Customer Care Office, and the Lost Property Office will be closed.

Grocery stores

Many grocery stores are open but may operate reduced hours on New Year’s Day. The following grocery stores are open, but be sure to check with your local store on what time they’ll be closed.

  • Urban Fare
  • Walmart
  • Costco
  • London Drugs

  • Libraries
  • Canada Post
  • All government offices
  • ICBC (although Dial a Claim is still open 24/7)
  • BC Liquor Stores
  • Vancouver Art Gallery
