The Vancouver Polar Bear Swim returns to English Bay on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, and you’re going to want to bring your warmest towel.
Start off the new year the right way by plunging into the Pacific Ocean during the frigid 106th event.
Brave swimmers will be able to dip into the freezing waters with thousands of other thrill-seekers or cheer them on from the shore.
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is also hoping for a massive turnout for the popular annual plunge.

“Last year’s Polar Bear Swim drew our largest crowd ever, and it’s a testament to how deeply this tradition resonates with our community,” said Laura Christensen, Park Board chair, in a release. “As we approach the 106th anniversary, we’re eager to see if we can surpass that record.
“Whether this is your first swim or you’ve been doing this for decades, we can’t wait to welcome you to English Bay.”
Over 13,000 registered swimmers took part in the Polar Bear Swim on Jan. 1, 2025.
The chilly event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the program starting at 2 p.m. and the official swim happening at 2:30 p.m.
Those who register for the free event online can also receive a commemorative certificate.

Vancouver Polar Bear Swim
Vancouver Polar Bear Swim is a tradition dating back to 1920, when Peter Pantages and nine other swimmers took a cool dip into English Bay on Jan. 1. Since then, thousands of Vancouverites come out every year to take part — some even dressed up in fun and unique costumes.
A 100-yard Peter Pantages Memorial Race will be held at the 2026 kickoff, and participating swimmers are asked to gather behind the start line at the black-and-white flags.
“The first three swimmers to touch the marker buoy near the lifeguard boat must provide their names to the lifeguard,” requested the Park Board.
The Polar Bear Swim will also have a designated family area and an accessible beach mat for participants.

Changerooms, washrooms, lockers, and warming tents will be available to swimmers. However, the park board recommends that participants arrive at English Bay swim-ready, as locker space is limited. Portable toilets will also be set up.
To keep the energy of the swimmers and the supporters up, the event will also feature live music and entertainment, food trucks, and more.
After completing the swim, participants can pick up their commemorative button at the areas next to the warming tents located throughout the beach. There is also commemorative merchandise available for purchase online and on-site.
