What to do with your old smartphone now that the iPhone 6 is here

Dec 19 2017, 8:00 pm

Now that the much-anticipated iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been officially announced, it’s time to consider what to do with your old iPhone or smartphone if you’ll be upgrading.

iPhones tend to hold their value better than other smartphones, but their value typically drops as a new model is introduced to the market.

Sphere, a cell phone trade-in website based in Vancouver, is offering an option for getting rid of your old phone. The process is simple: choose your current phone model, carrier, and condition, and a trade-in offer is shown. If you accept the offer, they’ll send you a prepaid shipping kit for free to send in your phone to them.

Once Sphere receives your old smartphone and confirms the condition, you get paid by cheque or PayPal, rather than in-store credit like the cell phone carriers offer.

The company accepts a wide variety of models, including Samsungs, LGs, Nokias, and even BlackBerries (we’ve all got one laying around). They give you 30 days from the day you accept your offer to send in your phone, which gives you enough time to transfer your contacts and other data from your old phone to your new one.

A locked iPhone 5S 16GB in “mint” condition will get you around $300 as of early September 2014, while a locked Samsung Galaxy S4 in perfect shape will get you about $200, but the values of these phones are dropping continuously.

With the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus here, these prices will drop more as time goes on, so it would be best to lock in a trade-in soon.
