WestJet cuts Vancouver flight route as U.S. travel demand wanes

Due to the diminishing demand for travel to the States, reaching a popular American destination from Vancouver will be slightly more difficult if you fly with WestJet.

The airline is cutting a route from Vancouver to Austin, Texas. WestJet has also slashed a couple of Alberta routes for the same reason.

WestJet’s language about the slashed route suggests that it could be reinstated at a later date, as it says the direct service route has been suspended.

“WestJet has made the difficult decision to suspend scheduled direct service between Vancouver, B.C., and Austin, Texas.”

It added, “WestJet remains committed to serving Austin via its global hub in Calgary, Alta., and will review opportunities to serve Austin directly from Vancouver in the future.”

The state capital of Texas is a popular tourist destination. Austin is a fun party town known for its live music scene. Austin is also known for its natural wonders and is a popular destination for outdoor activities like hiking and boating.

This news comes after the airline announced that it would add service from Vancouver to the East Coast of Canada. Last week, we reported that it was adding a direct route from Vancouver to Halifax. WestJet has also offered this seasonal route in the past, and it will return on July 1.

WestJet calls it a “major expansion of its domestic network,” including the non-stop Halifax service.

U.S. travel demand hasn’t just waned in the air. Travel between B.C. and U.S. land borders has also dropped sharply.
