About a month ago we let Vancouverites know about artist Ken Lum’s monument for East Vancouver, the “East Van” cross. Yeah it was a gang sign, but at some point it became much more than that. For those, like myself who grow up in East Vancouver it was a symbol of pride. More photos below.

The cross lights up at night and is approximately 60 ft tall and is situated at Knight/Clark and Great Northern Way. Hopefully this is the start of what I hope is many more notable public art sculptures in East Vancouver (bicycle wheels on top of the a lamp post just doesn’t cut it). This will no doubt show up in a lot of local hip-hop videos.

Thoughts on the cross and the lack of public art in East Vancouver?
