With all these recent storms it’s no secret: nature is having multiple orgasms. As winter writer I’m stoked to welcome you to winter coverage at Vancity Buzz. Already I’ve got my work cut out for me. Whistler opens this Friday! Need help with a ride? And this year’s International Freeski Film Festival on Saturday is going to be a doosey. So let’s begin…

The International Freeski Film Festival is this Saturday and it’s packed with awesome films of freeriding from noon ‘til late at Vogue Theatre downtown. The festival is a showcase of some of the best skiing and you don’t need to be a diehard skier to enjoy it either. Modern skiing has evolved from the old-school downhill race, and these days two planks get on top of any obstacle. Both professional and amateur films will be showcased at the event. The festival is going to end with a banging after party and the athletes are sure to cameo. Get your passes at http://www.if3.ca/if3/ontheroad2010.

Whistler is opening! Friday November 19th will kick off the winter season at Whistler. So far Whis has amassed 75cm of new snow and will get more just in time for opening. Whistler Mountain will be the only peak open with Blackcomb opening on the 25th. Another drop of 20cm on Wednesday will help cushion the mountain for keener riders on Friday. Some early season packages include both lodging and lift ticket for less than $90 a day, not bad for a cheap budget.

If you’re really strapped for a winter ride, I suggest signing up for the Newschoolers community. They’ve got a carpool thread for those looking to sell or buy a ride up to Whistler. Remember, if you’re looking to grab a ride always be polite and make it easy for the driver to pick you up (use good etiquette and give good directions). You can find that thread at http://newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/501622/.

I hope you enjoyed the welcome to Buzz Winter!
