Manslaughter charges laid after man killed in Downtown Eastside

Manslaughter charges have been laid in relation to the murder of a 36-year-old man that occurred in September 2020.

On September 7, Neil Scarisbrick was assaulted during an altercation at approximately 2:30 am. The incident occurred in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, near Columbia and East Hastings. Police say the victim was punched and died as a result of his injuries.

At the time of the incident, it was believed that the victim and suspect were known to each other.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says that after a months-long investigation, 36-year-old Jonathan James Payne has been charged with one count of manslaughter.

The incident was the 11th of 19 homicides that occurred in Vancouver in 2020.
