A man who broke into “several” boats near Hadden Park on Wednesday evening, and tried to elude police by jumping into the water, didn’t get very far.

According to VPD Const. Tania Visintin, the incident took place just after 6 pm, when officers responded to a call about a man in the park, “who was seen by passers-by acting paranoid, appearing agitated and speaking in nonsensical sentences.”

Visintin told Daily Hive that as officers were speaking with the man, “he went into the water and began swimming away.”

He then climbed into “several boats while in the water, and subsequently would jump back into the water,” she said.

Ultimately, a police drone was used to assist with maintaining contact of the man.

“Coast Guard assisted with the call and eventually the man boarded the Coast Guard vessel,” said Visintin.

The man was taken to hospital by police to be assessed by psychiatric doctors, she added.
