What Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said after Toronto Blue Jays blowout playoff win over the Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays hadn’t won a playoff game since 2016. That changed in emphatic fashion on Saturday at Rogers Centre.

Toronto jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the New York Yankees thanks to home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk. They ended the contest with a commanding 10-1 win.

There was a bit of drama for the Jays in the sixth inning, as New York loaded the bases with Aaron Judge at the plate when the score was 2-1. However, Kevin Gausman struck him out, and the Jays escaped the inning, only allowing one run.

Blue Jays batters took over in the seventh and eighth innings, pounding in eight more runs en route to the victory.

This win was a long time coming for this Blue Jays core, and specifically, Guerrero.

“Every time we come here, we do it for the fans,” Guerrero told Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae after the game.

“My first homer here at home, that feels amazing.”

The Montreal-born slugger got the party started during his first at-bat, smashing a ball over the fence in left field.

“Every time I come to the field, to the fans, I try to put on a good show, and thank God we did it today,” he said.

“To us, it’s one day at a time, no matter what. We’re trying to win it all.”

Not only did Guerrero homer in the first, but he ended the second inning on a double play with an incredible catch.

Guerrero made the catch despite the fact that the bat of Yankees batter Ryan McMahon was flying right at him.

“I just flew for the ball,” Guerrero said. “I don’t care if the bat hit me. In my mind, I just said, I gotta catch that ball, and I caught it.”

The Blue Jays’ highest-paid player was asked about the performance of his starting pitcher, Gausman, who went five and two-thirds innings, allowing just one run.

“We’re believing in him and we’re believing in everybody here. To play defence behind him is amazing. I always, 100% try to make a good play for him and try to make him proud of us.”

Surely, Gausman and all Jays fans are impressed with Guerrero after Saturday’s showing against the reigning AL champions.
