Vancouver's Sunflower Florist grows family business with love
Guided by love and driven by passion, the award winning Sunflower Florist in Yaletown is a vibrant reminder that success can blossom anywhere.
Shop owner, and senior florist, Mehrshid Tahmasebi (May) and her family immigrated from Iran in 2002, following a heartbreaking accident that left their daughter, Yasaman, paralyzed.
Conditions not being ideal for someone with a disability, May and her husband quit their jobs and used their savings to come to Canada with the hopes of cultivating a better future for their children. Their daughter was admitted to GF Strong to begin her rehab and training for a life of independence, the family also began their education of a culture they knew little about. Completely taken by not only the beauty of Vancouver, but the higher quality of life offered, May was inspired to follow her dream of owning her own business.

She began taking English courses and, having had previous experience with weddings in Iran, she also began her training as a florist. Her reputation as a premiere florist quickly grew throughout her neighbourhood as May developed an uncanny ability to embrace the multicultural diversity of Vancouver and display it in her arrangements, specializing in cultural weddings such as traditional Persian, Indian and Chinese.
That reputation has spread through North America, and May, and her daughters, Yalda and Yasaman, now have Sunflower Florist thriving. They been recognized locally, winning the Bridal Choice award by Wedding wire three-years in a row, Aislewalk Magazine award, and finished runner up in BC Wedding award twice in a row.
However, their early days in Canada are not forgotten, and giving back to the community is built into their business model. Sunflower Florist is actively engaged with several charities through donations and other support.
