Vancouver native with a badass nickname shines in MLB debut

The Tugboat has arrived.

Vancouver’s own Matt Wilkinson impressed in a big way in his MLB debut on Wednesday.

Also known by the incredible nickname “Tugboat,” Wilkinson was called up by the San Francisco Giants on Monday, marking the first Major League call-up of his young career. The 23-year-old, who was born in Vancouver but grew up in Ladner, got through two innings unscathed against the Cleveland Guardians in a game the Giants won 1-0.

Wilkinson is a well-known name to many Canadian baseball fans thanks to pitching for his home country at the World Baseball Classic earlier this year. He threw 2.2 innings in the tournament, racking up four strikeouts while giving up zero earned runs.

The left-hander may also be remembered by some fans from as far back as 2015, when he led White Rock to a Canadian Little League title. Ironically enough, Giants play-by-play voice Dave Flemming was on the call for that Little League World Series.

“There’s young Matt, he was already called Tugboat, and he pitched against Team Mexico for Team Canada in Williamsport,” Flemming said. “He struck out 16, and it just so happens, a total coincidence, I was broadcasting that game.

The Giants acquired Wilkinson earlier this season in a deal with the Cleveland Guardians that saw catcher Patrick Bailey head the other way.

“When we heard [the Giants] were getting a guy named Tugboat, in the back of my mind I was like ‘That sounds so familiar. That can’t possibly be the same kid, is it?'” Flemming remarked.

Wilkinson projects to be a back-end starting pitcher or a multi-inning relief option. The Giants are clearly going with the latter for now, and the early results look promising.

Sitting at 52-74 on the season, the playoffs are out of the question for the Giants, which could lead to an extended look for Wilkinson, perhaps even for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
