Gastown’s Not-So-Silent Nights

What: Some of Vancouver’s most talented choirs will be taking over the corner of Water and Cambie Street in Gastown on various nights in December to carol for charitable causes.

The Leckie Building (Water and Cambie Street) will also turn into a giant living holiday story as a 120-ft animated video projection, created by students at Vancouver Film School (VFS), will play every 30 minutes in sync with the chime of the famed Gastown Steam Clock during each Not-So-Silent Nights. There will also be late-night shopping, mistletoe treasure hunts, on-street treats, and giveaways and surprises to enjoy.

Dundarave Festival of Lights 2019

What: The Dundarave Festival of Lights is back for another season, offering festive, free concerts, a Christmas fair, and a Forest of Miracles. What: The annual festival includes a 65-foot Christmas tree — one of the tallest in Canada — and holiday shows every Saturday from 5 to 5:30 pm with pre-show festivities starting at 4:30 pm. The shows feature a multi-media light display, which utilizes 6,000 tri-color LED bulbs set to holiday musical favourites. There will also be photos with Santa, Santa’s Mailbox, and gift wrapping and personal shopping.

Vancouver Street Store 6.0

What: The annual Vancouver Street Store will bring Christmas cheer to the Downtown Eastside for another year. The free pop-up clothing store opens on Sunday, December 15, at 62 East Hastings Street from 10 am to 4 pm. While the store will operate exactly like traditional shops, with departments set up in different tents and volunteers acting as sales assistants — everything will be completely free. There will also be volunteer barbers and hairdressers on-site for the more than 1,000 shoppers expected.

High-priority donations this year include boys and men’s warm outerwear and pants, backpacks, blankets, toiletries, and closed-toe shoes. Donations can be brought directly to the Street Store on opening day.

What: The third annual Weirdos Holiday Market, presented by the folks behind local curio shop, This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven, showcases an eclectic array of unconventional gift ideas. This year’s market will also offer tarot card readings by East Van Tala & Ritual and Rose Hip, a “Puppyteeth” art installation, photos with Santa, music, games, a hot dog buffet, a sword-swallowing performance, and a bar.

Gingerbread Village 2019

What: The Downtown Surrey BIA’s third annual Gingerbread Village is a charity event that raises money for the Surrey Christmas Bureau. The gingerbread creations will be on display at Central City Shopping Centre near the Winners, and attendees can vote for their favourite with a cash donation to Surrey Christmas Bureau to help them support low-income families during the holiday season.
