A chaotic month of weather in Vancouver is wrapping up with a new warning that you may want to grab an umbrella for.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow-level weather alert for a “long episode of rain” that will begin soaking B.C.’s South Coast starting overnight and lasting until Friday, Jan. 30.

According to ECCC meteorologist Ken Dosanjh, Metro Vancouver is going to be hit with a series of frontal systems that will “pile on the moisture.”

“We’re heading into a more active period over the next few days,” said Dosanjh. “A series of impulses and frontal systems is bringing a long duration of rainfall to the South Coast.

According to the ECCC, rain will become heavy starting the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 28, with up to 60 mm expected by Thursday morning.

Significant rainfall is expected in several parts of Metro Vancouver, including the North Shore (West Vancouver and North Vancouver), central (Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminster), as well as in the northeast part of the region (including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge).

Rain will ease to start the day, but is expected to intensify on Thursday evening. An additional 40 to 60 mm is expected by Friday afternoon, before the intensity will taper to showers.

“It will be multi-system with windy conditions,” added Dosanjh. “During those times of heavier rainfall, water is expected to pool, and visibility may be reduced. So give yourself extra time for any travel.

Daytime highs could reach up to 11˚C on Friday and Saturday, and overnight lows could dip down to 5˚C on Monday to start the new week.
