A tourist from the United States has passed away just six days after he was struck by a cyclist in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) initially released some information about the collision on June 30, saying that it was investigating after a cyclist struck two people at a downtown Vancouver crosswalk.

VPD shared that the incident took place at around 5:30 p.m. on June 29.

A couple from the United States was crossing the street at West Cordova and Richards Street. VPD said they “reportedly had the right of way” when a cyclist who was travelling east on Cordova Street struck the two of them.

The cyclist was not injured and remained at the scene.

A 72-year-old male pedestrian lost consciousness as a result of the collision. The 72-year-old was transported to Vancouver General Hospital for emergency surgery.

In VPD’s initial release of information, it shared that the Vancouver tourist was in stable but critical condition. His wife had suffered just minor injuries but was also taken to the hospital.

Today, VPD shared that the 72-year-old man passed away in the hospital on July 5.

It’s unclear if there will be any charges relating to the incident, and the VPD said that the investigation is ongoing.

In response to our original story, many people chimed in about the incident in the comments, with some suggesting that all bicycles and scooters need to have liability insurance.

The speed some bikers and scooter riders travel at is dangerous for pedestrians,” a reader said.

Others shared their surprise that incidents like these don’t occur more often.
