A 72-year-old man who was visiting from the U.S. is in critical condition after being struck by a cyclist in downtown Vancouver.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is investigating an incident that occurred on Monday evening, which involved a cyclist striking two people at a crosswalk in downtown.
The intersection where the incident occurred is a busy part of Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood.
At around 5:30 p.m., a couple that was visiting from the U.S. was crossing the street at West Cordova and Richards Street.
VPD said that the couple “reportedly” had the right of way when a cyclist heading east on Cordova Street happened to strike both of them.
The 72-year-old male pedestrian lost consciousness. He was then transported to Vancouver General Hospital for emergency surgery.
VPD says that the victim is in stable but critical condition. His wife, who was also transported to the hospital, suffered minor injuries.
The Vancouver cyclist avoided injury but remained on scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
