Bad news umbrella fans!

Yes, it is with heavy hearts we must tell you that Vancouver’s very own Umbrella Shop is closing its doors, for good.

The iconic purveyors of rain protection have been in business since 1935, when the family-run firm opened its first store on the rain sodden streets of Vancouver.

But after more than 80 years of saving the city from a soaking, The Umbrella Shop announced on social media it will shut up shop when the current owners retire.

“It’s with heavy but excited hearts that we announce the official closing of the Umbrella Shop,” the company posted on its social media channels.

“While we have loved serving you, Vancouver, and other rainy locales across the world, it’s time to shut our doors and recharge for the next step in life: retirement!”

The post goes on to capture the sheer longevity of the family-run firm.

“As you know, the Umbrella Shop is a third generation family business,” it states. “We have staff who have been with us for decades, shop locations that feel like home, and techniques that are time-honoured and special to us.”

The good news is there’s still time for those of you looking to get your hands on one of the iconic umbrellas, as The Umbrella Store is set to stay open until the end of December.

“Closing such a large business is a hefty process,” the owners wrote on social media. “We are in the process of liquidating stock and stores will close by the end of December, which means there will be some great sales in store for customers, so it’s the perfect time to stock up on umbrella(s) you’ve been dying to have or give as a cherished gift.”

So farewell Umbrella Store, and thank you for sheltering us from the elements for all this time. You will be missed!
