Canadian airline launches first transborder flight from Vancouver to sunny U.S. spot

A new daily direct winter flight route between Vancouver and a sunny American city known for its hot weather has been announced.

Some might find the news surprising, considering the drop in travel from Canada to the U.S., and the fact that the airline announcing this new route is Canadian.

Porter Airlines has announced that it will begin offering a daily non-stop flight between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), which will kick off next year.

This announcement marks a significant expansion for the Toronto-based airline’s winter schedule, which will also see a 25 per cent increase in flights to southern destinations during peak travel periods.

Four new routes have been announced, including the new YVR to PHX route, which will commence on Feb. 2, 2026. The other new routes launching this winter include Ottawa to Miami, Montreal to Nassau, and Ottawa to Phoenix.

The Vancouver to Phoenix flight also marks Porter’s first-ever transborder service.

“Our updated winter schedule represents a major expansion of Porter’s network due to the strong response from customers for our new and existing sun markets. We are supporting this demand with new routes and increased frequency on existing popular destinations,” said Porter Airlines President Kevin Jackson.

All routes will be operated by the Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. It’s the largest jet in the E2 family.

“The service offering and aircraft features include no middle seats, complimentary Canadian premium snacks, free, fast WiFi, and a full selection of beverages served in glassware,” Porter says.

It adds, “For travellers seeking added comfort and flexibility, PorterReserve fares are available with extra legroom, fresh and healthy meals, priority airport and ticketing services, and more.”

Russell Atkinson, the director of air service development at YVR, says the route will offer millions of dollars in economic benefits.

“YVR serves the community by maintaining and expanding global connectivity for British Columbians. We’re pleased to welcome Porter’s first U.S. service from Vancouver, offering passengers another convenient, non-stop option to Phoenix,” Atkinson added.

Porter has more information about the new routes on its website.
