Vancouver has been ranked as one of the top cities for tech talent in Canada.

According to the CBRE Scoring Canadian Tech Talent report, Vancouver took home the second spot among the country and 12th in the world, wedged between Baltimore (11th) and Dallas/Ft. Worth (13th)

From a Canadian standpoint, Vancouver ranked only behind Toronto (4th) and ahead of Ottawa (14th) and Montreal (16th)

The San Francisco Bay Area, Washington, DC, and Seattle took home the top three spots in the overall rankings.

According to the report, the tech sector has “generally fared well” through the COVID-19 pandemic. This can be largely accounted for in e-commerce and social platforms, which saw booms at the start of the pandemic as people went into lockdown.

And success extended to more specialized areas like cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, gaming, and work-from-home enablers, all of which increased in demand.

In total, across Canada, the tech labour pool is 899,200, with Toronto accounting for a large portion of it and Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa rounding out the group.

From 2014 to 2019, Vancouver’s tech talent pool grew by 47.9%, and the tech labour force increased by 27,500 for a total of 84,900 workers. The remarkable growth of Vancouver’s tech talent also ranked the City as one of the fastest-growing markets, placing only behind Guelph and Waterloo.
