3 ways taking an improv class can improve your life in 2020

Hello, 2020. What a decade it has been, and what a decade it’s going to be.

We know resolutions can be hard (sticking to rigid diets, curbing your spending, exercising more often), but with the help of the folks at Vancouver TheatreSports (VTS), they don’t have to be.

Here are three ways you can improve your life with improv in 2020.

Improv/VTS

Build your skills and boost your confidence

Dive right into the new year by taking a class with the Improv Comedy Institute (ICI) at VTS. Remember, improv isn’t just for actors. Taking a class can not only help bring you out of your comfort zone in a safe and fun way, but it’s also great for building your skills. At the ICI, you’ll learn how to be a good listener, how to move an idea forward while building confidence in your own abilities to contribute, and how to relax and let your creative ideas flow.

Channel your spontaneous side

Not sure which class to take at the ICI? If you want to jump right into the heart of it, start with Spontaneity, the first of the ICI’s core classes. Talented teachers will help you let go, learn, and have a laugh — it’s a truly different experience. And who knows, you may want to take the next course they have… and even go on to audition for Rookie League! Either way, you’ll still have learned valuable lessons. Be sure to sign up ahead of time though, as these classes sell out quickly.

Laugh more and laugh often

Just want to dip a toe in? We get that. Why not try VTS’ Saturday Drop-In Workshops? These two-hour workshops happen every week from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the False Creek Community Centre. It only costs $20 per class, so there’s no excuse not to try it! Classes are first come first serve, so arrive a little bit early.

Another way to improve your beautiful life? As cliché as it may sound, simply have a laugh! Join VTS for a show after work, or on the weekend. Their hilarious improvisers can help you forget your troubles – if only for a little bit. After all, laughter is the best medicine you never knew you needed.

Check out the full VTS show schedule online, and don’t forget to have plenty of laughs in 2020. There’s no time like the present to try improv and improve your lifestyle at the same time!
