A day after we reported that the opening date for Kitsilano pool was up in the air, the launch date is now closer to the water, along with other popular Vancouver swimming pools.
Two popular outdoor pools will open on the weekend of May 17, and the park board will extend their hours until Kitsilano is open.
Second Beach and New Brighton pools will be open on May 17, and people can reserve their preferred swim times online starting May 14 at noon.
“We recommend pool users reserve online in advance through Showpass, which will also be live as of May 14 at noon,” the park board says. While a listing for New Brighton is already on the Showpass page, no dates are available.
Aside from the public pools, nine swimming beaches will be staffed with lifeguards beginning the May long weekend. Those swimming beaches include Locarno, English Bay, Jericho Beach, and Kits Beach.
But what about Kits Pool?
According to the park board, the tentative opening date for Kits is now mid-June.
“Kitsilano Pool is more than 50 years old and in its end-of-life phase, which means annual maintenance and potential repairs will continue to be necessary. Staff began their annual work to prepare the pool for the season, as soon as weather conditions allowed,” the park board said.
“During this process, pool infrastructure issues were identified that require additional attention before the pool can open. As a result, the pool is expected to open in mid-June.”
It added, “We recognize that the pool holds a special place in the hearts of Vancouverites as an iconic facility, synonymous with summer. Staff are working hard to complete the necessary work and are committed to providing timely updates as progress continues.”
The municipal government is preparing to award a contract to a consultant to perform a feasibility study to identify potential options for building a brand new pool in the area that is resilient to rising sea levels, storms, and the changing needs of the community. The municipal government has set aside $2 million for this study, which is being expedited to speed up the overall process of achieving a new facility.
To compensate, the Second Beach pool’s hours will be extended. Concession stands will also open on the May long weekend. In addition to the public pools and swimming beaches, spray parks will be open from May to September 30.
Two other pools will also have delayed openings, including Maple Grove, which opens on Saturday, June 14. Hillcrest outdoor and indoor pools will open on Monday, June 30, following maintenance.
