Temporary VANCOUVER sign installed at Canada Place in time for FIFA World Cup

Earlier this week, just in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a new temporary VANCOUVER civic pride sign was installed at the entrance plaza to the Canada Place promenade.
As previously reported by Daily Hive Urbanized last month, the City of Vancouver was unable to complete the permanent sign in time for the tournament, as the public art project remains in the design phase. It should be emphasized that the future permanent sign will have a design concept that is completely different from the current temporary sign.
At the time, the City indicated that a temporary sign would be installed ahead of the FIFA World Cup — something that has now been fulfilled.

The temporary installation features Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup colours of green and blue, incorporates nighttime illumination, and has been built to be more durable than previous versions of the sign seen in the area. Improvements include anchoring the structure securely to the ground.
Moreover, the sign is positioned with the three flagpoles centred directly behind it.

This temporary VANCOUVER sign joins the numerous official and unofficial FIFA World Cup-themed decorations, dressings, wayfinding, and public art that have been installed for the tournament, especially within and near the Downtown Vancouver peninsula.
When Daily Hive Urbanized visited the site earlier today, the temporary sign was already drawing considerable attention, with numerous passersby stopping to take photos.
The City also noted that an additional soccer-related activation will be installed at this location later this week.

The future permanent three-dimensional VANCOUVER sign will undergo a more extensive design process, with considerations for local culture, placemaking, and a distinctive identity unique to Vancouver. As a long-term fixture, it will also be designed to withstand weather, vandalism, and the everyday wear and tear of a prominent public space — something the various previous and current temporary signs were not designed for.
The location at the Canada Place promenade was chosen for its iconic backdrop of the Vancouver Convention Centre’s West Building, the harbour, Stanley Park, and North Shore mountains, and the area’s high pedestrian traffic, especially from event goers, conference attendees, cruise ship passengers, and other visitors.
After appearing during the summer seasons of the past two years, the temporary pink VANCOUVER sign has not returned to Cadillac Fairview’s Junction Public Market activation at nearby Granville Square this year. That styrofoam sign was left in poor condition following last summer’s operating season, and there had been an expectation that the City of Vancouver’s new permanent sign would be installed in time for this summer.
The municipal government told Daily Hive Urbanized the permanent sign is now set to be installed at the Canada Place promenade location in Fall 2026.

While the City has yet to release any conceptual artistic renderings of the permanent sign’s design, it is known that three local First Nations artists — each representing the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations — are responsible for designing a wrap or graphics layover for the installation’s surface, with the municipal government conducting a callout for those artists this past winter. At around the same time, the City also launched a bidding process seeking fabrication and contracting services for the installation.
The selected First Nations artists are not known at this time, but they will each be paid $25,000 for their work. The City has selected Toronto-headquartered design agency Entro Communications to lead the sign’s fabrication and construction, under a contract worth about $203,000.
The project’s cost is being covered by the municipal government (up to $300,000), local tourism authority Destination Vancouver ($200,000), and Vancouver Hotel Destination Association (VHDA). Downtown Van, the local business improvement association for Downtown Vancouver, is also providing support.
Giant three-dimensional destination names are highly popular worldwide, becoming some of the most photographed objects by visitors in some places.
