'Cozy' Vancouver studio rental in a house with coin laundry is riling up some folks

A Vancouver studio for rent that was shared online is leading to some angry reactions about the state of rental housing in the city.
The rental was listedĀ on Craigslist and is described as a 300 sq. ft. cozy one-bathroom studio near Commercial Drive. It’s listed for $700 per month, utilities included. The listing suggests it’s the lower floor suite of a single house.

However, there are aspects of the rental that make it stick out like a sore thumb.
For one, the listing states that the rental features a low ceiling and that people over 5’7″ might feel uncomfortable.
The listing made its way to the SlumlordsCanada subreddit, where it was described as “someone’s f**king coat room.”

The original poster on Reddit took issue with the fact that there was a shared coin laundry in a single house.

“Apartments and condominiums, sure, but a HOUSE?! How long before we’re charged per breath we take under someone’s roof,” they added.
Others took issue with the stove and sink situation in the “open kitchen” of the Vancouver studio rental.

They said, “The stove is built into the sink? With a plastic shelf over top of it?”
Someone responded saying that they believe the shelves are wood, “which is arguably worse.”
“Calling that ‘cozy’ should be a crime,” someone else quipped.
Despite the shortcomings of the unit, one Redditor said they believe that people will be fighting over the rental regardless.
Another Redditor said that the fact that people are calling this a reasonable listing means that “we’re officially doomed.” Others said they’ve seen worse. So have we.
One thing some folks questioned is how the renter would fit a bed inside the unit, as it would essentially take up the entire living space.

But again, many didn’t find it to be as ridiculous as others.
“I hate to be that guy, but this is actually a pretty great deal. $700, I bet you’re lucky to get a room in a house for 700+ in Vancouver, and for this, you get your own studio with a bathroom and kitchen. Yeah, you got to make space work with a twin bed but like, this is kind of a steal. If I was single and in Vancouver, I would snatch this shit so fast,” someone said.
There’s no denying the price, but is it worth it for all the tradeoffs you’d be making?
According to the most recent Rentals.ca report, the average asking price for a one-bedroom unit in Vancouver right now is $2,400 per month.
Which side of the debate do you stand on?
