After prolonged sunshine, here's when it could rain in Vancouver today

If you’ve been pining for some rain in Metro Vancouver, there’s a slight chance you could get your wish today, according to the weather forecast.

While Vancouver has avoided extreme heat, unlike parts of Ontario, which have experienced it throughout the summer, the Lower Mainland has been quite dry over the past few weeks. The dry conditions have prompted fire bans throughout the province.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, that could change today, albeit with a low probability.

As we mentioned in our weather report earlier this week, a cooldown was expected in Metro Vancouver, but the forecast the report was based on didn’t call for rain. That has changed over the past couple of days, with ECCC now calling for a 30 per cent chance of showers in Vancouver.

There’s also a 30 per cent chance of showers for the early evening.

As of 10 a.m., much of the Burnaby and New West area was covered in clouds, with conditions appearing ripe for rain.

While the probability of rain is low, it might be enough to warrant packing an umbrella if you’re heading out today. It could also be a little gusty near the water, with ECCC calling for wind speeds of around 30 km/h.

In addition to the 30 per cent chance of showers, the forecast predicts a few days of cooler temperatures than the previous week, with highs hovering around 22˚C. Things are expected to heat up again mid-next week, with a high of 27˚C currently posted for the upcoming Wednesday, which is predicted to be the warmest day of the week.

The change in temperature and potential rain should improve the smell in Vancouver, following numerous complaints last week that the city didn’t smell so great. The cause of the odour has yet to be determined.

Are you happy for the break in the heat, or would you prefer it stay sizzling?
