Vancouver Goldeneyes: Our new women's pro hockey team reveals name and logo
Vancouver’s PWHL team finally has a name.
The women’s pro hockey expansion team revealed on Thursday it’ll be known as the Vancouver Goldeneyes.
Despite the James Bond connection, the team revealed that the name was inspired by the common goldeneye, a duck that exists on the West Coast.
āIt means the world to me to have a team identity for the inaugural season in Vancouver,” Goldeneyes forward Jenn Gardiner said in a press release. “The Goldeneyes’ name is powerful, bold, and tough.”

The club revealed some of the details behind the new logo during the announcement.
They mentioned that the tip of the eye was specifically designed to point northwest, paying homage to the club’s geographical location.
The brown surrounding the goldeneye is said to represent wings, which is meant to “speak to our speed, precision, and dynamic spirit,” according to the club.
Despite the addition of the new logo and name, Vancouver’s recently revealed jerseys will remain unchanged for the upcoming season. This new logo is meant to complement the jersey’s primary colours of “Pacific Blue, Coastal Cream, and Earthy Bronze,” according to the team.

“When I think of the Goldeneyes, I think of the landscape of British Columbia: the mountains, the ocean, and the grit that comes with growing up here,” Gardiner said.
“We want our fans to feel the same pride, and to see themselves as part of the Goldeneyes. This is our identity, our province, and our opportunity to show the rest of the league what hockey in BC is all about.”
In the immediate reaction, most fans approved of the team’s new name.
“Love this! Unique and refreshing imagery and true to Vancouver,” said one fan on social media.
“Best. Name. Ever,” said another.
Of course, not all fans were impressed, with one saying, “A full year and this was the best they could come up with…”
The team also revealed that new Goldeneyes gear was now available for purchase, including hats, hoodies, and shirts.

This announcement came just minutes after Vancouver’s expansion cousin released their name, the Seattle Torrent.
Vancouver will play their first game in team history against Seattle on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Pacific Coliseum.
