Vancouver , like most urban cities, is a city of neighbourhoods. A look a this funky map only begins to scratch the surface of the neighbourhoods in the city. There are many neighbourhoods (new and old) that have developed over the years within the usual, municipality defined ‘hoods.
Looking at the map, notable neighbourhoods not included include English Bay, Davie Village, Gastown, Chinatown, Yaletown, Coal Harbour and Commercial Drive (formerly little Italy), just to name a few. Some other notable omissions are newer neighbourhoods such as Crosstown (Pender/Beatty area) and Railtown (Railway Street between Gore and Princess, north of Hastings Street).
There are also the smaller little ethnic areas that don’t have official neighbourhood status such as little India, little Saigon, Pinoytown, K town and Japantown, however, play a vital role in our city’s emergence as a multicultural hub and qualify as neighbourhoods.
Then there’s the financial district, which is also littered with residential condos and has become a neighbourhood to thousands of residents as well.
Furthermore, neighbourhood borders change depending on who you talk to. For instance, to many the entire downtown peninsula is “downtown”. I find that my suburban family and friends are more inclined to call the entire downtown peninsula as just that. Some of them even refer to the Broadway corridor as downtown, which is quite the stretch. Other neighbourhoods that frequently have blurred boundary lines include Yaletown and Gastown.
