Man arrested in Vancouver after Greg Moore's helmet was stolen

A Vancouver police investigation has led to the arrest of a man in the Downtown Eastside after a B.C. sports icon’s helmet was stolen.
According to the VPD, the helmet, belonging to Greg Moore, was stolen from the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
VPD has recovered the “invaluable exhibit” that belonged to Moore, an IndyCar driver.
Moore was born in New Westminster and tragically passed away at the age of 24 after a crash during a race in California.
An investigation was initiated on Sept. 3. The helmet that was stolen was worn by Moore during his victory at Rio 400 in Brazil in 1998. VPD notes that the helmet was on loan to the BC Sports Hall of Fame, courtesy of Moore’s family, and was part of an exhibit that documented Moore’s career.
Thanks to VPD’s Property Crime Unit investigators, who led the investigation, and security video, the evidence led officers to the Downtown Eastside. VPD identified a suspect and tracked the helmet to a residential building on Dunlevy Avenue.
Police have arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with the theft on Sept. 12, for theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
While the suspect has not yet been formally charged, he is expected to appear in court on Nov. 19.
“Greg Moore was a B.C. icon who rose to the top of his sport and inspired us all,” said VPD Sergeant Steve Addison in a statement.
“The theft of his racing helmet has impacted Greg’s family, the sports community, and everyone who cheered him to success. We’re relieved to have made this arrest and returned the exhibit to the BC Sports Hall of Fame.”
The BC Sports Hall of Fame issued a statement regarding the helmet’s recovery, which included a comment from Greg’s father, Ric.
“We’re incredibly relieved and thankful to have Greg’s helmet back where it belongs,” said Ric Moore, Greg’s father, on behalf of the family. “This helmet is more than just a piece of equipment, it’s a part of Greg’s spirit, and what it represented to him, to us, and to so many Canadians. We’d like to sincerely thank everyone who helped bring it home.”
