Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim gets booed at Juno Awards

Mayor Ken Sim took the stage at the Juno Awards last night as Vancouver hosted the biggest event in Canadian music, but he didn’t receive as warm of a welcome as he may have expected.

Sim addressed last night’s crowd at Rogers Arena to acknowledge Canada’s musical talent and thank all the organizers who made the event possible.

But while he was making his speech, jeers and boos could be heard around the stadium.

Video footage shows Sim taking note of the booing.

“Some undecided voters here,” he quipped before continuing with a land acknowledgement.

Folks who attended the awards also commented about the boos online.

One person who attended last night’s awards posted about the incident on the Vancouver subreddit page.

“…Most striking to me was how heartily booed Ken Sim was when he got on stage to pass the torch to the mayor of Hamilton, which will host next year’s awards,” they stated.

“Thank you for posting this cause I almost did! I was there too, it was shocking, I have to say. I knew he wasn’t ‘popular’ but… wow. Didn’t hate it either,” replied one person in the comments.

“That’s so embarrassing, sheeesh!!,” expressed another.

Others shared the news on X.

Sim — who was elected to office in 2022 — is the leader of ABC Vancouver, and the party has experienced some inter-party turbulence and controversy over the years despite holding on to a majority in council.

A by-election is currently underway in Vancouver to elect new councillors to fill two vacant seats in council.
