Vancouver 'stay-at-home son' is the new 'Jeopardy!' champion

A UBC graduate is celebrating his first win on Jeopardy!, and Vancouverites are cheering the hometown favourite on.
Brendan Liaw won over $13,000 on his first episode, which aired on Tuesday, May 20.
“Thanks for cheering me on yesterday,” Liaw posted on Reddit. “Tune in today to see if I can keep the streak going.”
The self-described “stay-at-home son” was trailing in the early part of the competition before he came from behind to hold a decisive lead heading into Final Jeopardy.

Liaw, who graduated from UBC with a BSc in Chemistry/Biology and an MA in Political Science, won $13,599 as well as the opportunity to defend his championship tonight.
He also shared some of his thoughts on his first Jeopardy! experience on Reddit.
“Mitch and Wendy were the two people I definitely did not want to play against,” he admitted. “They both seemed super at ease and zen in the green room, and both did well in the rehearsals. I was probably a little too trigger-happy, hence the higher incorrect response count. It’s something I really struggle with, having played Reach for the Top in high school (early incorrect responses are not penalized, and old habits die hard).
“I really did luck out with the DJ! board (though I think I would have had an even better time with yesterday’s game).”

Fans congratulated Liaw on the win and wished him continued success.
Liaw will be taking on Romy Negrin, a graduate student from New York, NY, and Sam Macken, an orchestral musician from Boulder, CO.
You can tune in to Jeopardy! on Wednesday, May 21, to see how Liaw does.
