If you’ve taken a stroll down West 4th Avenue in Vancouver lately, you may have noticed a new neon sign that’s brightened up the neighbourhood.

The colourful retro-style Kits Corner sign can be found on the corner of West 4th and Yew Street and has a connection to local billionaire and lululemon founder Chip Wilson.

His real estate company, Low Tide Properties, put up the sign, and Wilson says it’s a nod to his family’s love for the neighbourhood.

“My wife, family and I have been in Kits since the 1986 World Fair. We live and breathe everything that’s Kitsilano—from the beach to tennis to volleyball to the amazing people who have a way of living that elevates the world,” said Wilson in a statement.

“Our family has been involved in the ownership of 23 locations on West 4th. The unveiling of Kits Corner is the icing on the cake after nearly 40 years of living, working and investing in this neighbourhood. From Westbeach to lululemon, Ride Cycle Club, Peak Performance, Arc’teryx, Kit and Ace, TurF and more, we’re committed to keeping the spirit of Kits alive.”

The sign has an old-school ’50s feel to it and features directional arrows with the names of popular Vancouver beaches, such as Jericho, Sunset, Kitsilano, and Wreck.

Claire MacDonald of Low Tide Properties noted that it recognizes Kits Corner as “the spot” on West 4th.

“It’s where run clubs finish their loop, cyclists end their ride, or people soak in the sun with nowhere to be,” she said.

“We [put up the sign] because we believe in this neighbourhood and want to continue elevating and maintaining its unique energy and irreverent, fun culture.”
