“This role is perfect for anyone interested in gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic and customer-facing environment,” said Sunaco LP, owner of the fuel dock, in an online job posting.

“Fuel attendants will work as part of a team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Chevron Fuel Dock, located just east of Stanley Park. This is an exciting opportunity to enjoy Vancouver’s beautiful waterfront while earning a competitive wage.”

The successful applicant will work from Friday to Monday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Responsibilities include providing customer service and helping vessels fuel up, handling cash transactions, maintaining accurate records, and supporting team operations.

The starting salary is $27 an hour, and shifts consist of 10-hour workdays across four days.

The barge has been in operation for decades. The Chevron company previously owned this Vancouver unicorn, but now the barge belongs to the Sunaco LP.

The original facility, Standard Oil of British Columbia Number Five (SOBC 5), was put in place back in 1959, but it got an upgrade in 2009 when it was replaced by what you see today. The current facility was custom-built in Alaska by Alaska Ship and Drydock.

SOBC was in service from 1959 to 2009, even though it only had a 30-year lifespan.

A post about the open position on Reddit also revealed some of the benefits that the full-time, permanent Fuel Attendant will receive.

They include three weeks of paid vacation (120 hours), full medical and dental plus an array of other coverage, and an RRSP matching program.

“A valid Vessel Operator’s Card is an asset but not required; training will be provided,” added Sunoco LP in the job posting.

The company also added that “an ability to work outdoors in a fast-paced environment and provide exceptional customer service” is also a requirement for the floating gas station.

Chevron’s Vancouver Fuel Dock serves a variety of functions, including providing marine diesel and gasoline for ships in need, oil changes, and even selling some snacks to visitors in need of fuel for themselves.
