Thursday Artist Talk: Doreen Brust Johnson, “A Dream is to Write”

What: Canadian historical fiction novelist Doreen Brust Johnson tells her story of writing novels while having no formal education beyond grade eleven. She will take you through her early years growing up on a small farm in Saskatchewan to where she is now: a published author with three books titled Walking Barefoot in my ShoesSounds in My Shadow, and Momma, Momma, the Preacher’s Comin’.  In addition to sharing her writing journey and how she navigated the publishing world, Doreen will tell stories of northern prairie life, making history come alive. Copies of her books will be available to purchase at the talk.

Festa della Repubblica

What: A celebration of the Italian National Day. The historical Italian liscio group, Orchestra Casadei, will be performing at 6 pm in the Ballroom, followed by the celebrations for Festa della Repubblica at 7 pm. Orchestra Casadei will also perform one more set before Italian-Canadian Societies will offer regional specialties to all the guests. This event is organized in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.

Because We Are Girls

What: Reel Causes presents a screening of Because We Are Girls. A conservative Indo-Canadian family in small-town British Columbia must come to terms with a devastating secret: three sisters were sexually abused by an older relative beginning in their childhood years. After remaining silent for nearly two and a half decades, the sisters decide to come forward—not only to protect other young relatives, but to set an example for their daughters as well. Following the film, there will be a Q&A with filmmaker, Baljit Sangra, and film subjects Jeeti, Kira and Salakshana.
