Neill Blomkamp is one of Vancouver’s top film directors. No one could have predicted how successful his first feature length film District-9 would go on to be in 2009. From numerous Oscar nominations, to being named one of the top 100 most influential people of 2009 and the 21st most powerful celebrity from Africa by Forbes.

That is a lot of prestige to have been handed right out of the gate. With his breathtaking visual effects background, Neill is able to bring you visceral sci-fi worlds and ground them in reality in a way that makes us believe that these places could exist here today.

Neill looks to keep that momentum going with his next picture Chappie. Here’s a brief synopsis of the film.

“Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.”

The film also provides a stellar cast including Hugh Jackman (X-men Franchise), Sharlto Copley (District-9, Elysium), Sigourney Weaver (Aliens, Avatar), Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and also features South African music stars Yo-Landi and Ninja of Die Antwoord
