Vancouver Cheap Eats: Top 5 for $5 for Starving Students (Final Edition)

Dec 19 2017, 2:22 pm

Vancity Buzz and Chowmenow have dedicated this past month to finding cheap eats to help you ease into the school year.  From UBC to Langara, consider us your resource to ensure your appetite is suppressed and your funds are sufficient. This final installment of the starving students series is for all of you undergrads who venture to campuses around Metro Vancouver (we would never forget about you!).

Douglas College

Food at Pamola's Bakery and Deli

We’ve got one word for you: Molletes. No, we’re not talking about a hairstyle that’s business in the front and party in the back, we’re talking about these delicious open-faced sandwiches topped with black beans, cheese, and Pico de Gallo salsa available at Pamola Bakery in New Westminster. Just steps from Douglas College, these babies can be all yours for just $3.99. Their menu also includes quesadillas and tacos that are under the five dollar range.

Kwantlen University (Richmond)

pork bun - jade restaurant

Steamed BBQ Pork Bun $3.98

If you conveniently scheduled your classes so you don’t have to be on campus until noon, than we know just where you should go to fuel up before you embark on tutorials and lectures. Jade Restaurant offers a special 20% discount for those who dine between 9 to 11am, and with a dim sum menu that has an entire page for under five bucks, grab some friends, shell out the blue notes, and start munching.

Vancouver Community College

Just a 10 minute walk from VCC, you’ll find plenty of cheap eat options on Commercial Drive. So whether you’re hankering for this $3.50 breakfast special from Kyle’s Café, or you’re in the mood for $2.50 tacos from La Taqueria, there are plenty of options to keep your stomach and wallet afloat.

BCIT (Burnaby), Capilano College, Kwantlen University (Surrey)

Not sure if you’ve heard of this place before, but the menu is jam-packed with meals and deals for five bucks or less. It’s a little chain called Tim Horton’s, and for students at Capilano, Kwantlen, and BCIT, it’s conveniently located directly on campus. So while you purchase that oh-so-necessary java, add on a hot breakfast sandwich for $1.99, or have a sandwich and soup combo. It’s Canadian comfort food at it’s finest.

SFU (Burnaby)

With 28cent wings on Wednesdays, it’s only appropriate that Mountain Shadow Pub in Burnaby calls hump day “College Night”. Choose from Thai, honey garlic, BBQ, teriyaki, hot, or xxx hot.

If there’s a great cheap eat we’ve missed, share and review it on Chowmenow.
