The annual The Fair at the PNE is well underway, which means Vancouver’s exhibition grounds are brimming with a smorgasbord of edible treats.

Although some of the food prices have gone up this year, there’s no need to worry because Vancity Buzz has put together a list of 7 delicious options available (all under $10) that won’t blow your budget.

Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($4.50)

Starting off with a simple yet delicious snack, a classic grilled cheese sandwich from the Cheese Please stand. Choose your bread and cheese, then enjoy every gooey bite. The sandwich is crisp on the outside and filled with a whole lot of cheesy and buttery goodness. Total comfort food. For 75 cents apiece you can add a variety of fillings, from caramelised onions to flash fried pickles.

Roasted Corn ($4)

Another simple but equally as tasty dish is a serving of fire-roasted corn on the cob from the Roasted Revolution food stand. With some loose change you can get a classic corn on the cob, topped with melted butter and a pinch of salt. It’s light, juicy and won’t break the piggy bank.

Cannoli ($4.20)

Craving something sweet? Try the hand rolled, deep fried cannoli at the Cannoli King food truck. The cannoli’s filling of sweetened ricotta cheese, almonds and chocolate chips is utterly divine.

Wiggle Chips ($5)

Wiggle Chips are a PNE favourite. So much so, that hoards of fair goers can be seen munching away on these hot potato chips. With just $5 you can join the craze and enjoy a towering bowlful of the wiggly PNE sensation. Once served add your favourite seasoning (cheddar nacho, parmesan and garlic and ketchup just to name a few), at the ‘seasoning station’.

Those Little Donuts ($5)

No trip to the PNE would be complete without a bag or two of Those Little Donuts. These all-time fair favourites are freshly made and can be seen bobbing up and down in a pool of sizzling oil before being carried along a circular path until they turn golden–brown. Once these little doughy rings have tumbled down the chute they’re sprinkled with a delectable cinnamon sugar, making them impossible to resist.

Shrimp Boat ($8)

Scraping in at just under $10 are a handful of tasty shrimp focused dishes at the Shrimp Boat stand. Not only are these meals extremely satisfying but also great value for money, considering the prices of other fair food. On the menu are baskets of popcorn shrimp ($8), breaded shrimp ($9.50) and coconut shrimp ($10), all served with wiggle chips and coleslaw.

Deep Fried Raspberry Pie ($7)

If you still have room for more food, and are seeking an inexpensive dessert drop by the Think Sweet Deep Fried Pies booth for one of their deep-fried fruit pies. Stuffed with filling and wrapped by a delightfully thin crust these pies are wickedly good. For an extra $2 (bringing the total cost to $9 – still under the $10 cap) you can get a scoop of ice cream. Highly recommended as the pies are served hot fresh out of the fryer.
