Vancouver artists celebrates the many great individuals that add to the vibrancy of the city’s arts scene. Today we feature musician and busker extraordinaire David Morin.

If there were no music in your life what else would you do? What would you be passionate about?

If I weren’t involved with music, I would most definitely take on my second passion which is Painting (with oils specifically). On the rare occasion of having free time, I like to sit with a bottle of red and paint.

What was your first instrument?

I used to steal my mother’s guitar when I was in Grade 7 and try to learn songs I liked. Guitar was my first and still my favourite instrument to play.

When have you first felt passion to music?

I have always been infatuated with music. My family is very musical and my mother was a singer/songwriter. Growing up with her helped me find my passion for music.

How did you start busking? And why?

Busking, or street-performing, was a means to survive as a starving artist. Finding places to play in Vancouver can be challenging to say the least, and I was surprised at how much money and fans I gained from doing it. I soon found that it offered more stability in my life, and of course exposure.

What has been your biggest challenge in your music career so far?

Understanding the music industry. It still, to this day, is a bit of an enigma. The music industry is always changing and you have to constantly adjust your game plan to survive. So far the greatest success I have found in the industry is that marketing is key, and busking has been the best direct marketing strategy for me.

What are your next steps in music career?

I am all about the slow come up. Since I have finally finished my first record Every Colour which is currently being sold in Japan and online via iTunes, I plan on campaigning and touring around the world. At the same time, I am really eager to finish up a bunch of songs I’ve been working on, so hopefully mid next year I will have some more material to release.

Who are your favourite musicians?

I have always been a fan of r’n’b music, especially during the ’90s to 2000’s neo soul movement. D’angelo, Musiq Soulchild, Badu, Dwele, but right now I am digging Hiatus Kaiyote. I even had a chance to open up for them at Venue. That was a big moment for me.

What are your songs about? Do you write your songs?

I write my own songs. I produce my own tracks from drumlines to guitar licks, lyrics and harmonies. I do have a bit of help with things I am not that great at. I am a terrible violinist.

What shapes your music? Or who?

I am inspired by empathy. Meaning trying to find a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. My music is shaped by looking into the lives of those around you. How we relate to one another and the struggles we face in humanity and the stories that we are all living are gems for storytelling and song writing
