Vancouver 2010 Olympics: Suburban Live Sites

While the world will be in the city of Vancouver partying it up, the suburbs will be recreating the excitement in their domains as well. Here is a guide of free events occurring in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver.


Abbotsford Live Site
Location: Abbotsford Recreation Centre (map)
Date: Feb 12 – 28 (Thurs-Fri 5pm-9pm; Sat 12pm-9pm; Sun 12pm-7pm)
Cost: FREE
Abbotsford will be transforming its Rec Centre into a Live Site with an array of activities. Public skating and swimming will be the focus. But the most exciting aspect is being able to watch the Russian figure skating and Japanese speed skating teams competing. Complete schedule and official website.

New Westminster
Location: Queensborough Community Centre (map)
Date: During Feb 12 – 28
Cost: Unconfirmed
Rumours swirl of New West having some sort of Olympic celebrations. More info.


North Vancouver ValleyFest
Location: Lynn Valley (map scroll down)

Date: Feb12 – 28
Cost: FREE
Lynn Valley Village will offer a great place for the North-most suburb to gather and enjoy the Games. A giant LED TV screen will be put up outside with live events occurring. Activities include a 3-on-3 ball hockey game, “kurling”, and outdoor playground and cafe. The Discovery Zone will provide information on sport history and heritage. Official website.


Richmond O-Zone
Location: Minoru Park (map)
Date: Feb 12 – 28
Cost: FREE (some events have costs)
Island city Richmond is throwing the biggest and greatest party of all. The O-Zone is massive at 60 acres. There is a plethora of entertainment choices and number of things to do. Surrey 2010 Celebration Zone
Location: Holland Park (map)
Date: Feb 12 – 28 (times)
Cost: FREE
Surrey is throwing by far the greatest party of all the suburbs (outside Van and Richmond). A lot of money is invested in entertainment and it is highly evident in the wide lineup. A couple of the big names include Sam Roberts, Jully Black and Marianas Trench. There will also be Olympic activities: skating and curling. Official website.


West Vancouver Spirit Square
Location: West Vancouver Community Centre (map)
Date: Feb 12 – 28 (Sun-Thurs 9am-9pm; Fri-Sat 9am-11:30pm)
Cost: FREE
West Van events will be filled with a lot of dance and showcases for their viewing pleasure. Furthermore, a model of the International Space Station will be present to showcase how playing sports in space would be different. Official website.
