Inside downtown Vancouver's newest matcha hot spot to see if it's worth the hype
Located steps from Waterfront Station is Unscripted Coffee, a new cafe venture from sisters Angel (17) and Sara Dee (23) that has been all the rage in the online matcha community. So much so that, as self-proclaimed matcha snobs, we knew we needed to check it out.
We popped in on Tuesday evening (with an hour to kill between work and dinner reservations at Torafuku) and were happy to see that the cafe was still bustling with people an hour before closing.
Inside, the team has seemingly leaned into the scrappy nature that has come with the opening of the cafe (“opened a cafe with zero experience!” boasts the sister duo in the bio of their Instagram).
Tables consist of stacked milk crates (Ă la Chupito’s backyard patio), and the menu is littered with sticky notes, leaning into the building’s warehouse-inspired look.

Speaking of the menu, instead of a standard list divided between coffee and tea, the team here has organized its menu under different categories aimed at answering the question of how tired folks visiting are. Espresso-based beverages are under the “…is super tired” section, while chai and matcha are found under “…is kinda tired.” Slushies and kombucha are listed under “…needs to chill out,” and its featured beverages are listed under “…is feeling crazy!”

As expected, the team’s viral Sweet Corn Matcha was sold out by the time we arrived at 5 p.m. However, plenty of other options were still available, like its Iced Banana Bread Latte (available with espresso or matcha) and Calamansi Espresso Spritz.
Baked goods are also available here, including sourdough croissants from the Campbell River-based bakery Freya’s and other goodies from To Live For Bakery.
We opted to try its Black Sesame Matcha, a standard matcha latte served with a black sesame cold foam on top. You’re able to customize the level of sweetness for your drink, but the team helpfully suggested trying it at 40 per cent, and we happily obliged.
We were happy to find that neither the matcha nor the cold foam was overly sweet, and that the matcha flavour was very pronounced.

So, is Unscripted Coffee worth the hype? We sure think so. With so many cafes in the close vicinity, Unscripted sets itself apart through both its aesthetics and offerings. We will definitely be coming back to try that Sweet Corn Matcha, or whatever other fancy drinks the team is bound to think up.
