After responding to the University of British Columbia (UBC) today for what was only described as a “situation,” police have now issued a statement on the incident.
According to police, the incident began at approximately 11:30 am, when University RCMP officers were alerted to a non-specific threat on the campus.
“Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure both public and police safety, a building was evacuated for a short period,” police said. “However, evacuees have now returned to normal business.”
Police said that officers – along with support from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police
Dog Service – are currently at the scene of the previously evacuated building and other areas throughout the campus to gather further information.
At this time, “RCMP have been unable to substantiate the threat,” they added.
“We thank residents and students for their patience while areas were evacuated and ask for your continued co-operation while the investigation progresses,” said University RCMP Sgt. Eric Baskette.
