According to police, the incident began at approximately 11:30 am, when University RCMPofficers were alerted to a non-specific threat on the campus.
“Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure both public and police safety, a building was evacuated for a short period,” police said. “However, evacuees have now returned to normal business.”
Police said that officers – along with support from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police
Dog Service – are currently at the scene of the previously evacuated building and other areas throughout the campus to gather further information.
At this time, “RCMP have been unable to substantiate the threat,” they added.
Saying only that police are on scene at the moment, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is advising people in and around the campus – as well as those heading in and out of the area – that RCMP officers are currently on scene, investigating a situation.
While details on exactly what is happening at this point are slim, more information is expected to be released on the incident.
In the meantime, university officials are advising those in the area to “respect road closures.”
