
The University of British Columbia (UBC) continues to shine on the world stage.
UBC placed 40th globally in the 2026 QS World University Rankings.
Despite ranking among the world’s top 50 universities, UBC experienced a slight drop in this year’s list. In the 2025 ranking, the school placed 38th, down from its 34th position in 2024.
UBC also maintains its position as the third-highest-ranked university in Canada, behind McGill University (27th) and the University of Toronto (29th).
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Imperial College in London, and Stanford University took the top three spots in this year’s ranking.
The latest rankings evaluated more than 1,500 universities worldwide, factoring in five key criteria that were further broken down into indicators.
This included research and discovery, employability outcomes, learning experience, global engagement, and sustainability.

UBC received an overall score of 85.5 out of 100, with high marks in sustainability, international research networks, and academic reputation.
While UBC celebrated its climb, B.C.’s two other prominent universities ā Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the University of Victoria (UVic) ā saw less favourable outcomes.

2026 QS World University Ranking
SFU landed at 308th on the list, and UVic came in at 358th. UVic dropped nine spots from its 2025 ranking of 349th place, while SFU moved up slightly from last year’s 319th spot.
However, those two B.C. schools recently received accolades for sustainability impact in North America, according to another ranking.
In the latestĀ Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025, both the University of Victoria (UVic) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) ranked among the continentās top schools based on how well theyāre addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
