How to turn off the iOS 9 feature that could eat up your data

Anyone who has updated their Apple devices to the recently released iOS 9 may experience a spike in data usage if they don’t turn off one sneaky feature.

The operating system made available earlier this month includes a new feature called “Wi-Fi Assist” which, when enabled, automatically makes iPhones use cellular data when the connected Wi-Fi network has poor connectivity.

A perfect example is when someone is outside their house and their phone is still attempting to stay connected to their home wireless network, but nothing will load. This feature helps to automatically disconnect when the connection is of lower strength.

While amounts of how much additional data this is costing users are unclear, several have reported their data usage has skyrocketed since updating to iOS 9. Luckily for those on limited plans, the feature can easily be turned off.

How to turn off Wi-Fi Assist:

1. Open the Settings app and select “Cellular”

2. Scroll to the bottom of the “Cellular” page and notice the option called “Wi-Fi Assist”. Turn it to off.
