Tunnel Bluffs towing sign was absent because of vandals: Ministry

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure tells Daily Hive that some hikers whose cars were towed at Tunnel Bluffs recently had trouble finding contact information for the towing company because the sign displaying it was vandalized.

A sign advising a new 30-minute parking limit remained in place near the entrance of the Tunnel Point lot, but a sign with the towing company’s information “had been damaged and removed through vandalism,” a spokesperson told Daily Hive via email.

A new sign with Payless Auto Towing Ltd.‘s contact information was installed this week, the spokesperson added. For those who get their car towed at Tunnel Point, the number for Payless Towing’s North Shore branch is 604-988-4176.

A hiker Daily Hive spoke with said he narrowly avoided being towed at Tunnel Point and was concerned that he couldn’t find contact information for the towing company at the lot.

“People coming out on the trail could have no idea where their car has gone,” James Bergal said.

In March, the Ministry enacted a 30-minute limit at the Tunnel Point parking lot to discourage hikers from running across the Sea to Sky highway to the trailhead.

Some local hikers are frustrated by the decision, because they now have to pay for parking at the alternate Lions Bay trailhead, which fills up quickly with other hikers climbing the Lions and Brunswick Mountain.
