Tricycle driver stopped by police on Highway 1 in Burnaby slapped with surprising fine

Feb 27 2026, 5:40 pm

An electric tricycle pulled over in the HOV lane during rush hour traffic made for a shocking sight on Highway 1, but not as surprising as the fine that the operator will be paying.

Burnaby RCMP posted online about the incident on Thursday, Feb. 26, issuing a “friendly reminder” for all who may want to try a similar stunt.

“Your tricycle does not qualify for the HOV lane on Highway 1 in rush hour traffic.”

What was eyebrow-raising to many followers of the detachment on social media was the amount that the tricycle driver was fined: $109.

“Only $109? For being that much of a danger,” asked one commenter.

“$109 is a pretty cheap way to piss a lot of people off,” added another.

“109?? Dude should pay 100k or never be able to get a license,” posted another follower of the Burnaby RCMP Facebook page.

It hasn’t been a good time recently on the road for several B.C. drivers.

A B.C. driver who was pulled over for travelling at double the speed limit had a pretty straightforward reason for police.

According to information shared by the BC Highway Patrol, it pulled over a novice driver in a 2018 Ford Mustang on Highway 1 at Mackay Road in Laidlaw, B.C., earlier this month.

Highway patrol clocked the Penticton woman travelling at 200 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

A 19-year-old West Vancouver ‘N’ driver was found buried in the mud on Highway 1 in Burnaby due to driving too fast.

According to the BC Highway Patrol, on Feb. 13, an ambulance driver reported that a black Hyundai sedan was driving too fast on the Gagliardi Way onramp. They added that the driver had sped right off the highway.

And a shocking Vancouver crime spree involving several stolen vehicles, a fire, and a foot chase with police ended with a suspect arrested and taken to the hospital.
