TransLink mulls idea of allowing leashed dogs on SkyTrain, buses

Do you think dogs should be allowed on SkyTrain? One New Westminster woman does, and now TransLink is considering the idea.

Margaret Halsey presented a proposal to its board of directors meeting last week, hoping that the agency would extend its current pet policy.

Right now, the only animals permitted on board are guide dogs and small pets, but they must be housed in a carrier.  The cage must be able to fit in your lap.  It can go on the floor as long as it’s not blocking doors or passengers.

Halsey wants to be able to bring her Whippet dog, Smith, with her on SkyTrain.  The dog would be leashed.

Halsey told The Province newspaper she understands some people would be concerned that dogs would go to the bathroom on the public transit system, but she says it wouldn’t be an issue with well-behaved dogs.

She’s not pushing for animals to be allowed on at all hours. Instead, she said even a few hours of the day could be designated to be animal-friendly, and dogs wouldn’t need to be on the train during peak hours.

TransLink confirmed that it is now reviewing its 2001 pet policy after hearing from the passionate dog owner.

A spokesperson said pet allergies must be considered, and “best practices from other transit agencies.”

Halsey says pets are allowed on the subway system in Toronto, and on transit in Calgary, and there have been minimal problems.
