TransLink begins upgrades to BC Parkway in Burnaby to separate pedestrian and cycling pathways

Pedestrians and cyclists will get separate paths along a stretch of Burnaby’s BC Parkway, as TransLink now begins construction on a series of improvements to the popular east-west walking and cycling route.
This project covers a 1.5-km-long section of the BC Parkway between Imperial Street and Buller Avenue — the segment just east of the Bonsor Recreation Complex in the Metrotown area, and going beyond several blocks east of SkyTrain’s Royal Oak Station.

The BC Parkway through Burnaby follows the same corridor used by the Expo Line’s elevated guideway.
The public transit authority is widening the route to provide pedestrians and cyclists with dedicated pathway space to improve safety, comfort, and access.
Along with separating walking and cycling traffic, crews will improve the crossing controlled by traffic signals at Royal Oak Station. Intersections at Nelson Avenue, MacPherson Avenue, and Buller Avenue will also receive upgrades.
Other changes include better lighting, signs, pavement markings, and landscaping along the corridor.

People should be able to continue using the existing path for most of the construction period. However, some brief closures to enable certain work may be necessary. Drivers can also expect occasional lane restrictions and delays.
Construction is scheduled to reach completion in early 2028.
These improvements in Burnaby are just part of the larger, 26-km-long BC Parkway, which runs through Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, and Surrey, following the Expo Line’s route. TransLink oversees the pathway’s operations, maintenance, and upgrades.
In late 2025, the City of Burnaby completed five km of programmable LED lighting installations on the underside of the Expo Line’s elevated guideway between Patterson Station and Edmonds Station to visually activate the concrete structure and provide some nighttime illumination for the BC Parkway.
Last year, in partnership with the City of New Westminster, TransLink completed a widening of a 0.75-km-long segment of the BC Parkway along Stewardson Way between River Drive and 14th Street at a cost of $6 million. That project similarly provided pedestrians and cyclists with separate paths, along with intersection improvements.
