New off-ramp to Highway 17 opens at Pattullo Bridge replacement in Surrey | Daily Hive

Nine months after the stal̕əw̓asəm (Riverview) Bridge first soft opened to vehicle traffic as the replacement crossing for the Pattullo Bridge, more of the final road connections at both ends of the new bridge are now complete and open to traffic.

Last week, a new off-ramp opened in Surrey, connecting eastbound traffic from the new bridge directly to westbound Highway 17 (South Fraser Perimeter Road).

This direct link did not exist with the old bridge and represents the project’s most significant net gain connection to the overall road network.

As well, at the New Westminster end, the replacement on-ramp from Columbia Street to the new bridge’s eastbound lanes opened in late August.

Neither road connection could be completed and opened until sections of the old bridge were demolished, as certain segments of that structure physically stood in the way of the footprints for the new ramps.

For the same reason, the shared pedestrian and cycling pathway along the west side of the new bridge is not expected to open until later this fall.

As of this month, a substantial portion of the 1937-built Pattullo Bridge has already been demolished, particularly the sections over land in New Westminster and Surrey. The crossing permanently closed to vehicle traffic in February 2026. By late summer, crews had also begun the careful work of dismantling its pedestrian pathways and deck.

Demolition is expected to be completed by late 2027, ending with the removal of the old bridge’s in-river piers and foundations.
